Best for your itinerary: Minivan if you want to get to Huay Xai efficiently; slow boat if the journey itself is part of the experience. Important: There are also overnight sleeper buses, currently shown around 15:00–16:30 → 06:00–07:00, which could save you a night of accommodation. Or Luang Prabang → Huay Xai 🚤 Best option: 2-day/1-night slow boat down/up the Mekong Day 1: Luang Prabang → Pakbeng — ~8–10 hrs Overnight: Stay in Pakbeng (accommodation usually not included) Day 2: Pakbeng → Huay Xai — ~8–9 hrs Departure: Around 7:00–8:30am from Luang Prabang; arrive Pakbeng ~5pm. Day 2 leaves ~8:30–9am and arrives Huay Xai around 5:30–6pm. Cost: Around $20–65 (£15–50) depending on whether you book a basic ticket or organised transfer/tour. What you see: Mekong scenery, jungle, villages and Pak Ou Caves on some organised boats. Important: It's a proper long travel experience, not a luxury cruise — boats can be noisy/crowded, so bring snacks, water and layers. For December: There are currently organised boats running 5 days a week (Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri & Sun) from November–March, but schedules can vary. For your itinerary, I'd definitely choose the slow boat over the 10–12 hour minivan. The Mekong journey is one of the more memorable parts of travelling through Laos.

For your trip, I’d choose Little Wild Hostel Khaosok. ⭐ 4.7/5 Small, modern, relaxed hostel rather than a big party hostel Recent reviews specifically mention that the owner arranges the overnight floating-bungalow tour and onward transport. This sounds particularly good for you if you want the 2D/1N lake experience without having to organise all the transport yourself. Other good options khaosok Jungle Hostel — ⭐4.3/5. Their 2D/1N floating-bungalow package is 2,500 THB (~£55) with shared bathroom or 3,000 THB (~£66) private bathroom, including round-trip transport and an English-speaking guide. Coco Hostel Khao Sok — classic budget backpacker option. Their lake tour is particularly cheap, but tends to have larger groups. Khaosok Smiley Bungalows — another well-known backpacker option; their floating-bungalow tours are around the 3,400 THB range. My choice for you: Little Wild Hostel. I'd book the hostel first and message them asking for their December 2026 2D/1N Cheow Lan Lake floating-bungalow package, specifically asking whether Khao Sok pickup/drop-off and all meals/activities are included.
